Consider Nursing

Calling All Nurses

Approximately 78 million baby boomers entering their golden years are placing demand on our nation’s health care system. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that 1.2 million new and replacement nurses will be needed by 2014 to serve the care-seeking population.

“Since the demand for nurses is so high, the possibilities are endless," says Robert Rosseter, associate executive director of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. “There has never been a better time to become a nurse. Nurses today provide bedside care, conduct research, teach at universities, consult with big businesses, lobby on Capitol Hill, run hospitals and other care centers and set up independent practices. Nurses with advanced degrees provide primary care, prescribe medications, lead community health efforts and are respected as expert health care providers."

5 Reasons you Should Consider Nursing

  • Nursing is the top occupation for projected job growth in the United States. Right now, 75 percent of all hospital vacancies are for nurses.
  • There is plenty of growth potential to move up the ladder and earn an advanced degree.
  • The pay is better than you think. According to the American Nurses Association, incomes range from $35,212 for staff nurses to about $71,000 for nurse practitioners.
  • Some hospitals even offer relocation allowances, child care and tuition reimbursement.
  • It’s an admirable profession. A recent Gallup poll found that the public views nursing as No. 1 for “honesty and ethical standards of various professions."

A Rewarding Career

Hospitals are increasingly offering new incentives to attract nurses such as tuition reimbursement and relocation allowances. In addition to the educational and monetary rewards, many nurses believe the nature of the work is a reward in itself.

“Careers in nursing are the most rewarding because we make a difference in people’s lives every day,? says Sharon Robinson, a medical/surgical nurse at Parker Adventist Hospital. “The knowledge that you’ve done something to ease someone’s discomfort, to help them on the road to recovery or to ease their transition from this life to another is such an honorable thing to do."
