The shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint, which allows the arm to move in a circular motion as well as a hinge motion to and from the body. Surrounding the joint in the shoulder are various muscles, tendons and ligaments.
Common Shoulder Conditions
The shoulder is made up of a rotator cuff, a group of muscles that cover the shoulder joint. The muscles and tendons in the shoulder can often stretch or tear with overuse or injury.
Other shoulder conditions may be badly broken bone near the shoulder, badly torn or damaged tissues or poor result from a previous shoulder surgery.
Shoulder Replacement Surgery
shoulder replacement surgery
, also known as a shoulder arthroplasty, is performed to replace the bones of the shoulder joint with artificial joint parts. In some cases, a total shoulder replacement may be necessary. A total shoulder replacement requires the round end of the arm bone to be replaced with an artificial stem that has a rounded metal head. The socket part of the shoulder blade is replaced with a plastic shell.
A shoulder replacement procedure is recommended when a patient suffers from severe shoulder pain or loss of function in the shoulder. While a shoulder replacement surgery will not fully restore activity in the joint, it will greatly decrease the amount of pain and repair joint strength.
The procedure may require a one to three day stay in the hospital. If necessary, Parker Adventist Hospital has an extensive
program to assist our patients with physical therapy, providing various approaches including specialty techniques of manual therapy, aquatic therapy and women's health physical therapy.
